Paige knew even as they walked away from the spot arm-in-arm that every step forward would now be wrapped in the gut-wrenching challenge to be strong enough to do what was best for him even as her own heart quietly broke. At his car he took her violin case and stowed it in the back before helping her inside.

So much like the night of prom and yet so very different. On his side, Nelson swept off his gown, folded it up, and laid it between them along with his cap and diploma. In the seat, he ran his fingers through his curls in a desperate though not fully successful attempt at getting himself back to perfection. It didn’t matter. She loved him however he showed up.

“You sure you don’t mind if we stop at my place on the way to yours?”

“It’s fine.”

“K. Just checking.” And with that, he leaned over for a quick kiss.

She obliged the gesture before sitting back to let the evening’s events wash over her. Even the memories had ways of gripping her heart in a clench. Truly this was going to be a bigger challenge than she would ever have imagined.

Reaching over, Nelson turned the stereo up, and the strains of one of his instrumental songs that she had memorized filled the air around them. His hand fell from the stereo buttons and landed only inches from hers. She knew what he was asking, and though getting in any deeper when she knew this wouldn’t last, couldn’t last, was probably not the smartest thing in the world, she bridged the gap and put her hand over his. How she was going to miss those hands and that voice, those eyes, that smile…

She closed her eyes, trying desperately to memorize all of it for the moment that was now an inevitability. His leaving.

In that second she knew if she let herself dwell on it, she would waste every one she had with him from now until it showed up. A decision split through all the rest of it. She would not waste the time they had thinking about when it would end.

Her eyes came open, and she glanced at him. “That was a great speech by the way.”

He looked over at her in surprise. “You thought so?”

She smiled, and it wasn’t even hard. “Of course.”
